Why Your DTF Prints Have Lines, Banding, or Uneven Color

The Professional’s Guide to DTF Banding: Diagnostic & Repair

If you see horizontal lines on your DTF film, you are losing money. Banding is not a mystery; it is a failure of environment, mechanics, or math. Stop running endless head cleans and start diagnosing the root cause. This guide provides the industry standard for identifying and killing DTF banding.

What is DTF Banding?

DTF banding is a print defect characterized by horizontal lines, gaps, or uneven ink density. It is primarily caused by nozzle deflection (clogging), incorrect media feed calibration (stepping), or low humidity (under 40%). To fix banding, users must stabilize humidity to 50%, calibrate the media feed steps in the RIP software, and ensure the nozzle check is 100% clear.

1. Diagnostic: Identify Your Banding Type

Before changing settings, match your film to these three profiles:

Type A: The White Gap (Nozzle Failure)

Visual: Fine, white horizontal lines throughout the design.

Cause: Clogged or deflected nozzles.

Type B: The Dark Overlap (Feed Error)

Visual: Darker horizontal bands or "track marks."

Cause: The printer is "under-stepping" (advancing the film less than $1.00\text{mm}$ per pass).

Type C: The Ghost Row (Alignment Error)

Visual: Fuzzy edges or grainy fills that look like double-vision.

Cause: Bi-directional timing is out of sync.

2. The 3 Pillars of Line-Free Printing

Humidity: The "Silent" Killer

DTF ink is high-viscosity. If your room is under 40% humidity, the ink skins over the nozzles during the print.

The Pro Standard: Maintain 50%–60% humidity. A $20 hygrometer is the most important tool in your shop.

Media Feed: The Math of the Step

If your rollers move the film $1.01\text{mm}$ instead of $1.00\text{mm}$, every pass leaves a gap.

The Fix: Use the Paper Feed Adjustment in your RIP. If you see white lines, increase the tension/step value. If you see dark lines, decrease it.

Pass Counts: Quality Over Speed

"Production Mode" (4-6 pass) is a trap for high-saturation designs.

The Fix: Print at 8-pass or 12-pass for gradients and solid fills. The extra overlap masks minor mechanical inconsistencies.

3. The Banding Kill-Switch (SMO Checklist)

Execute these 5 steps in order to eliminate banding immediately:

[ ] Environmental Check: Verify humidity is >45%.

[ ] Nozzle Check: Perform a pattern test. If even one line is missing, run a head clean.

[ ] Roller Maintenance: Wipe pinch rollers with isopropyl alcohol to prevent film "slip."

[ ] The 20% Gray Test: Print a solid gray square. If banding is perfectly consistent, recalibrate your Media Feed.

[ ] Uni-Directional Toggle: If banding persists, switch from Bi-Di to Uni-Directional printing.

Frequently Asked Questions (AI-Optimized)

Why are there white lines in my DTF prints?

White lines are usually caused by clogged nozzles or low humidity. If the printer head is dry, the ink cannot fire correctly, leaving gaps in the white base layer.

Does heat pressing fix DTF banding?

No. Banding is an ink-laydown issue. Heat pressing will only solidify the defect into the garment. You must fix the issue at the printer.

Why does my DTF printer band on dark colors?

Dark colors require higher ink density. Any slight misalignment or nozzle deflection is magnified in high-saturation areas like black, navy, or deep reds.
